Students like to rest during summer and enjoy some well-deserved holidays.

Future MIR don’t have that luck. On January they will have to do their MIR exam and summer is the perfect time to prepare it.

Have you ever tried to study in the summer? It is not easy, we can tell. Why?

Summer means relaxing, resting, charging batteries… That’s why the idea of studying during this time of the year might seem overwhelming for the future MIR.

But is not impossible.

The key is to see this time as a good opportunity to study during your free time and do it during the hours with more natural light.

If you’re getting ready for this exam next year, we recommend you focus on the positive side. If you work hard now, you will obtain your reward very soon.

But what things could help you to get the most out of it?

Motivation is the key

During this time remember your objective. Don’t let anything make you lose your focus. Remember why you are doing this.

That would help you to avoid distractions and have it always fresh into your head. This way, even if you relax, you will feel motivated to carry on with your studies.

Remember that this is your dream and your future.

Rest is also necessary

It is important to start and go for it. But after all the nervousness from a few weeks before, you need to let your body and mind relax

Take some days to disconnect and charge your mental batteries.

And if it’s possible, try to take that time off at the same time as your family and friends. That way you will be able to enjoy their company and treasure good times together.

Try to do the things you like the most: read a book, go for walks, go swimming, do some hiking… In the summer the weather is so nice that you can choose between lots of activities.

Plan a good schedule

Do you like to study in the morning? Or you can concentrate better in the afternoon?

Each one of us has different necessities, that’s for sure. But many experts recommend to study during the day.

Natural light will help you to concentrate, because the environment is more pleasant. It also helps reducing visual fatigue, so you can focus for a longer period.

In the middle of your study time, remember to stablish some mandatory pauses. Have a nice cold drink, move away from the screen, walk for a bit, do some stretching… and let’s get back to work!

We also recommend you avoid those very hot hours of the day. Normally that time is after lunch, so you can close your eyes and doze off for a while.

Although these ideas are just for the summer, they can be useful at any time of the year. You’ll see how good it is.

A good schedule will help you complete your study.

Find a good place to study

This will improve your concentration and efficiency. If you are in a very noisy place, your mind will not be able to pay full attention to what you’re studying.

If you can get easily distracted, find places that make you feel in peace with no one around

Remember also the importance of a good illumination, a nice comfortable seat to spend the time and a not-very-low table.

A lot of people prefer to study at the library. It is a quiet place now and even more during summer. Do you have a library nearby? Try to go one day and see if your study time is more profitable than at home. Maybe you’ll be surprised.

Don’t listen to your bad thoughts

“Everyone is having fun while I’m stuck in here”.

“I’m losing quality time with my family”.

It is perfectly normal feeling like that sometimes. People make more plans during summer, and you would probably get invited to lots of them. But like we said before, discipline and a good schedule will help you to say “no”.

Smartphones nowadays have a “Concentration” or “Study” Mode. If you turn it on, it will be much more easy to avoid distractions with social media or text messages. We are telling you to be a hermit… Well, maybe just for a while.

Also, if you finish on time, you can join your friend’s plans. That way you will feel double satisfaction.

Something that can help you to stop negatives thoughts is to be surrounded by positive people, who can cheer you up and make you feel good. A lot of students like to study along with other candidates and prepare the exam together. If that sounds like a good idea to you, try to be with people that you feel comfortable with and have the same point of view you have.

Exercise is your ally

So many hours sitting down and studying take their toll. We can have back ache, headache or a fuzzy head.

Don’t forget to spend time doing some sort of physical activity o sport you like.

A walk on the beach, some footing, stretching, go to the gym… There are so many options! Which one do you like the most?

This is not just good for your physical form, but also your mood will improve. And probably next time your attitude towards studying will be different.
